The Story in a Bag: "A Lovely Day for a Parade"

To make up for my missed Writing Prompt Wednesday last week, I now present you with the short story I wrote over Memorial Day weekend for Kansas City, Missouri's ConQuesT 44 science fiction convention's Story in a Bag contest. What in the heck is a Story in a Bag!?!? you might be asking.  Well, good question.  The Story in a Bag contest involved the following: drawing five random prompts out of five different brown paper bags.  Taking your five prompts and writing a story using all five prompts ... Project List for June 2013

And here we go again!  I cannot believe how fast May went by!  WHOOOOOSH!!! This worked out super swell last month, so I'm going for it again: Write 200 words a day or 1400 words a week, of anything, period. I know this seems like a low number in the grand scheme of things, but I’d much rather continuously exceed my goal than continuously fail to reach it.  So, I set it low for daily counts, to be within an acceptable range to make up words if I don’t get to write for a day or two! (Goal = ... View Post

Bait, Fish, and Reel Report for May 2013

Holy moley May was a craaaaazzzyyy month!  I'm not even sure I can untangle all these numbers, but I'll try my best! .... Someone once said that to be a successful and productive writer, one had to do the equivalent of “cutting bait, fishing, and reeling ‘em in, all at the same time”!  This translates to writing as working on projects-in-progress while at the same time submitting completed projects to potential markets and also continuing to cultivate new ideas for future projects.  In case you ... Writing Prompt Wednesday: Progress on short story "The Transference"

Comment: Today for my Wednesday writing, I completed 733 words on my current short story WIP, tentatively entitled "The Transference" for the moment, but previously called also "Blackmarket Body".  I'm attempting to complete this before June 3rd so I can submit it to the Writer's Digest Writing Competition.  Toward that end, wish me luck!  :P  I have included a small excerpt here for your reading pleasure.  Hope you enjoy! *** Dimitrii smiled.  His teeth were remarkably straight.  “No, they ... 1-800-BETS… ON?! How writing for publication is like gambling.

This post is about gambling.  But not the conventional type of gambling... there are no casinos or sports or races in this type of gambling (okay, well maybe you could call parts of it "racing"...!?).  THIS particular type of gambling refers to the gamble every individual who calls themselves a writer takes every time they send out something in the hopes of seeing it published somewhere. And recently I have come to the determination that if a person wishes to succeed in any way as a writer ... View Post

Writing Prompt Wednesday: "Blissful Childhood", a found poem.

Comment: A quick lunchtime post!  Found poetry is a great way to be quickly creative and keep those cogs turning! Blissful Childhood From an article on St. Mawes, Cornwall in a Travel + Leisure magazine! The text reads: Painted in pastel, winsomely nautical, my favorite one. We have arrived. Places speak unexpectedly, beyond a vision of who you might be. Living ever since. Come here to search out a key role, based on memories of blissful childhood. Enamored with bursts of wildflowers and ... View Post
