CURRENTLY BOOKING FOR
FEBRUARY 2023 AND ONWARD
[However, it’s possible there may be cancellations here and there throughout the upcoming year. If you’d like to be notified of a future opening due to a cancellation, please go ahead and send me an email per the instructions at the bottom of this page, and I’ll add you to the waiting list. Thanks, and I look forward to working with you!]
What’s the Cost?
I’m an indie author, too. I totally get the limited budget thing. Which is why I’ve decided to officially open up my “underground” freelance editing service to all fiction authors, everywhere, to help bolster my own book-production fund. What this means for you, however, is that if you book a project with me now, you’ll get locked in at this current price, forever. For as long as you’d like me to edit your works, this is the price you’ll get, even if I someday increase prices for everyone else (and I’ve already increased my prices from 2018 to 2020!).
So what is the current cost?
$5.50 per 1000 words.
What You’ll Get…
Most editors will quote you different prices for different editing levels. There’s proofreading, line editing, content editing, developmental editing … which one do you need? And what’s included at each level?
Different people say different things. I find it easier on everyone not to worry about these levels. If you choose me to edit your novel, I will edit it on all levels at the same time, from typos and grammar errors to character inconsistencies and plot holes, all for the same price.
I find this the best way to do things because for one, it satisfies my OCD when it comes to editing, and for two, I’ve seen authors hire editors for exorbitant costs to do a line edit, and have character inconsistencies fall through and make it to the published book. And vice versa: an author pays a lot of money to an editor for developmental edits, and there are typos galore in the finished book.
Sure, you could hire two editors for two passes, or the same editor for two passes, but OUCH … that’s a huge hit to your wallet! I prefer not to let that happen to you.
If your manuscript really needs a lot of work, though, I will send you a generalized summary of the major issues and return the manuscript to you for correction. The editor’s function is to make sure your manuscript has been written correctly. A writer should know the basics of their craft before involving an editor or proofreader. If you think you might need help with the craft of writing rather than an editor, Purdue University has a great online writing lab for all your basic writing needs, and I highly recommend it!
What I’ll Read…
Genres I will gladly edit are:
- scifi and any of it’s subgenres
- military scifi (though I will not comment on the accuracy of military things, FYI, that’s outside my wheelhouse)
- fantasy and any of it’s subgenres
- paranormal
- mystery
- thriller
- LGBT of any of the above
I will consider:
- MG (middle grade) books of any genre
- Children’s books (picture or chapter)
- nonfiction
- poetry
- contemporary romances
- horror
Please do not send me:
- YA (young adult) of any genre
What’s the Process?
So that there are no surprises, and to be certain we’re an awesome writer-editor duo, I prefer to give you a sample edit of 10 pages before you make any kind of payment, and before the official edit begins. So the full process would look something like this:
- You send me 10 pages of your manuscript, preferably from the middle so it’s a more accurate representation of the full manuscript
- I edit the 10 pages as I would edit the rest of your manuscript and send it back to you (this would be the stage at which I’d let you know if the manuscript needs too much work to proceed with the full edit, too)
- If you are satisfied with my style of edits, we proceed with the full edit
- I send you a quote based on your manuscript’s final word count and we agree on a timeline
- You pay half up front via PayPal
- I complete the full edit and send your edited manuscript back to you
- You pay the remaining half of the cost via PayPal
- Everyone’s happy!
References Available Upon Request!
You don’t have to take my word for it! I’ve been editing for a handful of authors for about three years now, and they keep coming back, so I guess that means they’re happy, right? If you’d like to speak with them yourself about the quality of my edits, drop me a line at jrfrontera@gmail.com and I’ll be happy to put you in touch with them!
Additionally, I regularly copy edit and proofread for my current day job, and proofread (past tense) grant proposals and scientific research papers at my previous job, bringing my professional experience with editing to a full 10 years. While I prefer to do my moonlighting on the fiction side, I can provide references for this work, as well.
