Music Monday: An Exploration of What Powers my Stories – "Demons" by Imagine Dragons

Second in my series of exploring the noveling soundtrack to my current WIP, The Good Thing, is the song “Demons” by Imagine Dragons.

I have several Imagine Dragons songs on this novel’s playlist, but out of all of those, “Demons” is probably the one I’d choose for my favorite in representing the characters and story.

Every time I hear this song, no matter where I am, I get immediately transported back into my novel.  The lyrics work very well from the point of view of one of the main characters, Vince Dannel.  Especially this section:

They say it’s what you make
I say it’s up to fate
It’s woven in my soul
I need to let you go

Your eyes, they shine so bright
I wanna save that light
I can’t escape this now
Unless you show me how

When you feel my heat
Look into my eyes
It’s where my demons hide
It’s where my demons hide
Don’t get too close
It’s dark inside
It’s where my demons hide
It’s where my demons hide

Vince most definitely has his demons.  Internal demons which serve as his motivation for all of his actions throughout the book.  Internal demons which Pavel eventually comes to see as well, but which Vince doesn’t exactly want Pavel to see, either.

And as Vince and Pavel learn to stop hating each other and actually began to grow fond of each other, Vince wants to save Pavel from what’s about to happen.  But, there’s already a domino-type effect of events in play and he feels they can’t escape from the future that’s been set in motion, no more than he can escape the demons that have been haunting him for years.

Unless, of course, maybe Pavel could show him how …

Give it a listen yourself, then let me know some of your own favorite songs to write to in the comments!  I’d love to hear what kind of music fits YOUR novel!
