What’s that you say? I skipped April? I don’t know what you’re talking about….
So now that this new month is already skipping on by, let me just briefly outline the plans for May!
- Continue writing the new fantasy novel, with a goal of roughly 500 words/day.
- Complete 30k in edits for a client before the end of May.
- Complete Wordwraith Books intern interviews and select final candidate.
- Prep speaking points for panels I’ll be sitting on at ConQuesT over Memorial Day weekend.
- Email goodies to my lists.
- Upload chapter of the new novel to Patreon for my paying patrons!
- Ship copies of Breakfast Time on the Farm to illustrator and Collector-level patrons.
- Continue work on the self-editing online course. (You can get a checklist preview of this and get on the list for the discounted beta release here, btw!)
And that will about do it for this month! Lots of work to do, but all wonderful work that I do so love to do! 😀
Wait … what? Oh, April. You noticed that, eh? Okay okay. Let’s rewind and talk about April!
Yes, you may have noticed I sort of skipped over April here. That wasn’t really on purpose, I was just sooooooooooo busy that the month was basically over by the time I realized I hadn’t come here to document my goals and successes and failures. Whoops.
What happened in April?
Well, namely, it was Camp NaNoWriMo. I started my new novel project, that fantasy I mentioned above. (More details on that later. Hopefully.) I had already entirely plotted the thing, so I began writing fiercely on April 1st. My goal was 30k for the month, extremely ambitious. By the end of the month, I had nearly 15k words. Which wasn’t too shabby, considering everything else going on that month, but I was a bit bummed I didn’t hit my goal.
Still, I’m happy for the 15k that didn’t exist before. I’m also happy with how easy this novel is coming along. As of this writing, I’m officially 1/3 through the rough draft, woot! Because I’ve already plotted a paragraph summary of each chapter, I’m FLYING through the draft! It is an AMAZING feeling, and I’m totally loving it so far! The frustrations of not knowing where the story is going and the struggle to wedge events and characters in later are all gone this time, and I’m sold. After years of trial and error, I can safely say with confidence now that I am absolutely meant to be a PLOTTER!! (More on that later, too.)
Also in April was Planet Comicon. Most of the month, when I wasn’t writing, I spent researching my panelists and coming up with outlines for my panels, since I was moderating. I wanted my panels to have a bit of structure, and be sure the most important points were covered in our limited time. I spent a LOT of time on this, and it appears my hard work paid off, as ALL weekend people came up to me and said I did an excellent job. I was also encouraged to keep moderating. I’m not sure that will happen, lol, but it was a great deal of fun and I met some really awesome people I hadn’t met before, including Jason Arnett and Alex Grecian and Carole Barrowman, so that was wonderful!
AND like a crazy person, I also decided to cosplay at this year’s Planet, mostly because Felicia Day was going to be there, and I’ve wanted to make her Codex outfit for about 7 years now. 😛 This was the year to do it, if ever there was one. So, with the generous help and much-needed sewing skills of my mother, the Codex cosplay was born.
So most of the last half of April I was up till midnight every night trying to put the costume all together in time for the con.
Then, once at the con, I spent a great deal of time juggling the cosplay with autographs and photographs and racing to the complete opposite end of Bartle Hall to get to my panels. (But more on that later, also.)
And so that is that.
My only goals for April were to write 30k on the new novel, complete the Codex cosplay, and complete the panel outlines, then live through the con. Considering I did almost all of that (and at least got half my wordcount), I’d call April a success!
So there you have it, folks!
April, May, and everything in between!
Till next time….
