Bait, Fish, and Reel Report for October 2013

Someone once said that to be a successful and productive writer, one had to do the equivalent of “cutting bait, fishing, and reeling ‘em in, all at the same time”! This translates to writing as working on projects-in-progress while at the same time submitting completed projects to potential markets and also continuing to cultivate new ideas for future projects. In case you missed my previous post on this subject, at the end of every month I compile a list of what I accomplished as far as ... View Post

Writing Prompt Wednesday: "Intersecting Ciphers", a found poem.

*** a crossword puzzle intersecting and directly above more ominous the pathology of cryptology complex, albeit nonexistent wishful thinking found almost anywhere and creating patterns encryption technology with dubious cryptograms making the rounds a guilty confession of love embedded in spectacular sources claiming ciphers. *** From the article “For your Eyes Only” in the Smithsonian September 2012 issue, by Mark Strauss. Writing Prompt Wednesday: "Ode to the Apple", a writing exercise.

I call this an "exercise" for two reasons: 1) It is outside the range of my normal creative comfort zone, and thus forced me to exercise both brain and muse, lol.  Hopefully it will do the same for you, should you wish to give it a whirl yourself! 2) It was given to my current writing workshop with Deb Sturgess as "homework", which is then by default exercise, ha.  Naturally, as such, I composed it right at the very last minute!  Whoops. Read up on Odes here, if you wish.  It's really quite a ... View Post

October the 4th Is Not Too Late

The title of this post is based on the title of the book "October the First Is Too Late", by Fred Hoyle.  One of the many books of my late grandfather's which I read many years in the past, and thoroughly enjoyed.  One of the books responsible for the fact I now write primarily in the genre of science fiction.  It is also possibly partially responsible for my interest in science-y things in general. However, this post is not about it being too late.  This post is specifically about the fact ... View Post

Writing Pompt Wednesday: "Nightmare or Opportunity", a found poem.

by contrast, a hyper-functional machine increasingly quixotic expanding across the miles built largely on miracles - a foil to fake glitz global urbanization sprawling landfill inspired by spacious character not sustainable resistant to experimental work, threatening to locate the beauty in urban debris the ideal vision cooled - a toxic mix of nightmare... or opportunity? (From a Smithsonian magazine article on the architect Koolhaas.) ... View Post
