1-800-BETS… ON?! How writing for publication is like gambling.

This post is about gambling.  But not the conventional type of gambling... there are no casinos or sports or races in this type of gambling (okay, well maybe you could call parts of it "racing"...!?).  THIS particular type of gambling refers to the gamble every individual who calls themselves a writer takes every time they send out something in the hopes of seeing it published somewhere. And recently I have come to the determination that if a person wishes to succeed in any way as a writer ... View Post

Pushing Through the Romanticism of Being a Writer

I think probably the most valuable thing I learned from NaNoWriMo last November (aside from the very important fact that I could, indeed, write a whole lot of words in a short amount of time) was that sometimes, writing could actually feel like work.  I feel that many creative people, especially when they are younger, feel that if they could just get a job doing their creative enterprise of choice, and make a living off of it, they could be happy working all day every day for most of their adult ... What I Learned about Prologues… WD Tutorial lessons!

As some of you know, I subscribed to the Writer's Digest Tutorials a few days ago.  Yesterday, I finally took the time to sit down and go through one of them, specifically the "Opening Up: How to Create Captivating Opening Pages" by literary agent Kathleen Ortiz.  You can find it and all other WD Tutorials here, if you are so inclined, and I highly recommend checking them out.  The subscription idea is a wonderful thing, too... unlimited access to all Tutorials, for up to a year if you wish. I ... View Post

Castles in the Sky

*** When I was young (and by that I mean in middle school) and this whole notion and practice of writing novel-length original stories was still brand new to me, I found myself utterly fascinated with the entire process.  I found it startling that I could begin a page having no idea what would follow, and yet after a few sentences were jotted down based on my vague idea of what should happen next, the story poured out with very little effort on my part.  That didn't mean it was always entirely ... Musings.

What I want to know is why it took me 26 years to realize what I really wanted to do with my life was to write novels? I was lying in bed the other night and suddenly realized my 27th birthday is coming up fast.  Realized I was almost thirty.  Realized I'd actually been creating stories since I could draw a decent stick figure.  Realized I'd been dreaming of publishing a novel since I was fourteen.  Remembered how I had wanted to be a young published ... The long-awaited return of Novel!muse! Whooo!

Anyone wondering across my other blogs or sites every now and then may recall me whining and complaining about how fanfiction takes up all my time and I never write my novels, which is what I feel I should be putting most effort into, since they are the projects that have the potential to do such things like, you know, make me some money.Having just finished my Saints Row 2 fanfic, I've recently found myself strangely fanfic-free. It feels weird. Sure, I'm working on a rather long Mass ... View Post
