NaNoWriMo BOOT CAMP! Lesson Two: CHARACTERS AND GMCs!

NO, I do NOT mean a GMC car!!!  You don't know what else I could possibly mean by GMC?!??!  You think your characters are just bodies to occupy your awesomely fantastic setting or move through your utterly original and mind-blowing plot!???!? WRONG!!!!! WRONG WRONG WRONG!!! Failing on the CHARACTER LEVEL will make your entire book FAIL!! THAT'S RIGHT!  I don't care how awesome your setting is or how mind-blowing your plot!!!! Without fully realized and FLAWED characters, your book will go ... View Post

Writing Prompt Wednesday: "Timed Writing Spiral", an exercise.

Another one from the writing workshop with Deb Sturgess.  The whole point of this workshop is finding methods to stoke your creativity and get the juices flowing again if you are stuck.  So every week we do different bizarre things that end up surprising me with how well they loosen up the muse.  I'm always amazed at what I come up with, especially when at the beginning of these exercises I'm always like, "OMG!  COMPLETE BLANK!  WHAT AM I GOING TO DO!!!?!?!" Here's a tip, for everyone.  If you ... View Post

Writing Prompt Wednesday: "Ode to the Apple", a writing exercise.

I call this an "exercise" for two reasons: 1) It is outside the range of my normal creative comfort zone, and thus forced me to exercise both brain and muse, lol.  Hopefully it will do the same for you, should you wish to give it a whirl yourself! 2) It was given to my current writing workshop with Deb Sturgess as "homework", which is then by default exercise, ha.  Naturally, as such, I composed it right at the very last minute!  Whoops. Read up on Odes here, if you wish.  It's really quite a ... View Post

Bait, Fish, and Reel Report September 2013

Someone once said that to be a successful and productive writer, one had to do the equivalent of “cutting bait, fishing, and reeling ‘em in, all at the same time”! This translates to writing as working on projects-in-progress while at the same time submitting completed projects to potential markets and also continuing to cultivate new ideas for future projects. In case you missed my previous post on this subject, at the end of every month I compile a list of what I accomplished as far as ... View Post

October the 4th Is Not Too Late

The title of this post is based on the title of the book "October the First Is Too Late", by Fred Hoyle.  One of the many books of my late grandfather's which I read many years in the past, and thoroughly enjoyed.  One of the books responsible for the fact I now write primarily in the genre of science fiction.  It is also possibly partially responsible for my interest in science-y things in general. However, this post is not about it being too late.  This post is specifically about the fact ... View Post
