So I completely forgot that Wednesday was Wednesday this week. Just bear with me folks, I'll get my brain back in order one of these days! I meant to share this exercise a long time ago but then forgot about it, too, so now that I am remembering things again, I thought this would be as good a time as any to finally post it! The following is the result of a writing exercise done during the New Letters Writing Workshop at the University of Missouri- Kansas City. We were to take the ... View Post
Professional Feedback Round #2: "Cheetah on the Roof"
This weekend I attended the New Letters Writing Conference at UMKC as a noncredit "student". After having just attended both the RT Booklovers Convention and the writing panels at KC, MO's ConquesT 44 science fiction convention, this very-much-more-structured and heavily literary conference was something of a... um... well, completely and utterly different world, lol - although it ended up being just as helpful and informational. But I'll get into that in another post. The purpose of this ... View Post
The Story in a Bag: "A Lovely Day for a Parade"
To make up for my missed Writing Prompt Wednesday last week, I now present you with the short story I wrote over Memorial Day weekend for Kansas City, Missouri's ConQuesT 44 science fiction convention's Story in a Bag contest. What in the heck is a Story in a Bag!?!? you might be asking. Well, good question. The Story in a Bag contest involved the following: drawing five random prompts out of five different brown paper bags. Taking your five prompts and writing a story using all five prompts ... Project List for June 2013
And here we go again! I cannot believe how fast May went by! WHOOOOOSH!!! This worked out super swell last month, so I'm going for it again: Write 200 words a day or 1400 words a week, of anything, period. I know this seems like a low number in the grand scheme of things, but I’d much rather continuously exceed my goal than continuously fail to reach it. So, I set it low for daily counts, to be within an acceptable range to make up words if I don’t get to write for a day or two! (Goal = ... View Post
The RT Booklover's Convention Experience! Yowza!
A little background for you: Tuesday, April 30th, 4:45pm... I very abruptly discovered a writing/reading convention was taking place in Kansas City, MO - a 40 minute drive from my house. It had already started, in fact, because it was the totally awesomesauce RT Booklover's Convention, which I had never heard of until that very moment. I could probably blame my ignorance on two things, 1) I am not a romance genre follower (but might be now!) and 2) I have been very behind on the world of ... View Post
What I Learned from my Writer's Digest Workshop…
In case some of you weren't aware, I recently enrolled in a Writer's Digest online workshop. It began October 4th and ended December 27th of 2012. It was entitled "12 Weeks to a First Draft", and consisted of 12 assignments, each of 2- 2500 words, which were submitted weekly for individual critique by the instructor, a published career author or a literary agent. In my case the instructor was Stephen Mertz, who has published over 30 books in his ... View Post
