Last little snippet for the month. Shucks. I was kind of having fun posting these! But I can't give away too much, I guess, right? This piece comes from Chapter 16, and is also unedited. Thanks as always for reading! - JRF *** Vince brought the van to a sliding halt at the much smaller secondary gate along Una Duo’s southern side and jammed it into park, flinging his door open as he turned to Sokolov. “Grab the gun. You see anything coming near us that ain’t me or that guy over there, ... View Post
Writing Prompt Wednesday: An excerpt from "The Good Thing", the NaNo novel.
An itsy bitsy third piece for all of you lovely people! Thanks so much for reading and commenting and liking things around here! I really appreciate it! November's almost over, and then I'll have more interesting (and varied) things to say, promise! ;) In the meantime, enjoy this snippet from Chapter 14... unedited and raw, hopefully not terrible... although I admit I feel kinda cruel for leaving you hanging on this one but, hey, I gotta make you want to read the book, right?? Mehehehe... ... View Post
Writing Prompt Wednesday: an excerpt from "The Good Thing", the NaNo Novel.
Another small piece, this one from Chapter 13 of the current WIP, the novel I hope to finish during NaNoWriMo… again, this is an extremely rough draft, written during 30-minute word sprints with some fellow members of my writing group! Current word count for November as of this morning stands at 19,651. - JRF *** Pavel hardly felt the hands locked around his biceps, hardly saw the nearness of the rifle muzzles to his face. They led him out the front door, stumbling, mind and body numb. ... View Post
Writing Prompt Wednesday: an excerpt from "The Good Thing", the NaNo novel.
A small piece from Chapter 12 (conveniently titled "Shit Hits the Fan" at the moment, ha) of the current WIP, the novel I hope to finish during NaNoWriMo... this is an extremely rough draft, and in fact I have hardly any recollection of writing this part at all, since I was in a writing coma at the time. Seriously. Regardless, I hope you enjoy. :) -- JRF *** Vince waited. He waited, hunkered down behind the chicken coop, listening to his own rigidly-controlled breathing, to the pounding ... View Post
Writing Prompt Wednesday: "Intersecting Ciphers", a found poem.

Writing Prompt Wednesday: "Summer Sledding", a short memoir.
I wrote this last year, actually, when applying for acceptance into the Institute for Children's Literature. They asked for a childhood story in 500 words or less on the application. This is what I came up with, and it is, indeed, a story from my childhood. :) I was accepted into the Institute for Children's Literature, but never enrolled. Now that I am coming up with some ideas for children's books though, I will have to reconsider! Hope you enjoy! *** When I was young, a refrigerator box ... View Post
