Another one from the writing workshop with Deb Sturgess. The whole point of this workshop is finding methods to stoke your creativity and get the juices flowing again if you are stuck. So every week we do different bizarre things that end up surprising me with how well they loosen up the muse. I'm always amazed at what I come up with, especially when at the beginning of these exercises I'm always like, "OMG! COMPLETE BLANK! WHAT AM I GOING TO DO!!!?!?!" Here's a tip, for everyone. Writing Prompt Wednesday: "Ode to the Apple", a writing exercise.
I call this an "exercise" for two reasons: 1) It is outside the range of my normal creative comfort zone, and thus forced me to exercise both brain and muse, lol. Hopefully it will do the same for you, should you wish to give it a whirl yourself! 2) It was given to my current writing workshop with Deb Sturgess as "homework", which is then by default exercise, ha. Naturally, as such, I composed it right at the very last minute! Whoops. Read up on Odes here, if you wish. It's really quite a ... View Post
Writing Prompt Wednesday: Defining "Loblolly"
Something a little different this week! This started as purely for random fun, when a friend of mine (agirlwhowrites, in fact) posted the Word of the Day on her Facebook page and offered Life Points for anyone who could come up with the best sentence using that word. At first, I wasn't going to attempt it. But when no one else seemed to seriously rise to challenge, I thought, "Well, why not give it a whirl?" In the end, I had so much fun coming up with a sentence for each definition ... View Post
Writing Pompt Wednesday: "Nightmare or Opportunity", a found poem.
by contrast, a hyper-functional machine increasingly quixotic expanding across the miles built largely on miracles - a foil to fake glitz global urbanization sprawling landfill inspired by spacious character not sustainable resistant to experimental work, threatening to locate the beauty in urban debris the ideal vision cooled - a toxic mix of nightmare... or opportunity? (From a Smithsonian magazine article on the architect Koolhaas.) ... View Post
Writing Prompt Wednesday: "The First Crosswalker", a very short short story.
A new short story has been brewing in my head for the past few days. So, for today's Wednesday Prompt, I decided to just jot down a random something in the universe of this new short story, featuring one of the main characters (the First Crosswalker). Below is the result. This is meant to be a type of backstory, I suppose, or maybe even a lead-in to what will be the actual story eventually. Not entirely sure yet. But I had a lot of fun with this, and I'm really looking forward to getting on ... View Post
Writing Prompt Wednesday: An excerpt from my WIP novel, "The Good Thing".
Following is an excerpt from Chapter 5 of my current novel WIP, a science fiction with a romance twist. It was going to be submitted to the Quirk Books Looking For Love Contest, but will be nowhere near finished by the deadline. The new goal for this one is to be finished with the entire rough draft by the end of December 2013. Hope you enjoy this little snippet! *** “Hey, Sokolov!” Pavel jumped, spinning the chair around to see George himself standing there, his strawberry-blond hair ... View Post
