The First Rule of Write Club is: You Do Not Use "Thought" Verbs

I don't usually do stuff like this, where I simply link directly to or simply copy and paste articles into a blog post.  Usually I add them straight to my Resources page and stop there.  Or summarize the main points after they've been strained through my own personal brain filter.  But every now and then there comes some advice that strikes me in such a way with its utter brilliance that I just have to share, and share directly.  This is one of those instances. The following was emailed to ... View Post

Writing Prompt Wednesday: "Flock Mentality", a found poem.

Style: sociocultural psychic Paris and Notre Dame cobbled streets in pencil skirts and blouses six-inch platform wedges or maybe just Keds France and Rome clever scarf-tying a casually knotted kerchief from Hermes Girl Scout troop leader or paragon of chic? Dutch and Bhutanese we are trucking in sartorial and nationalistic cliché boys in knickers and wooden shoes folks from other places all looked universal distinctive superficial in time-tested uniforms of subtly-coded flock ... Another Belated Writing Prompt Wednesday: "Starting from Chekhov", a writing exercise.

So I completely forgot that Wednesday was Wednesday this week.  Just bear with me folks, I'll get my brain back in order one of these days!  I meant to share this exercise a long time ago but then forgot about it, too, so now that I am remembering things again, I thought this would be as good a time as any to finally post it!  The following is the result of a writing exercise done during the New Letters Writing Workshop at the University of Missouri- Kansas City.  We were to take the ... Project List August 2013

So it's like the middle of the month, but better late than never!  O_o For the last half of the month of August, I need to... Submit short story "The Transference" to Writer's Digest Popular Fiction Contest by September 1st. Edit two documents for two different writing friends. (Done! 8.18.13 and 8.19.13) FINISH FIRST ACT OF THE CONTEST ENTRY NOVEL.  At the moment I'm having a hard time seeing how I can have this entire thing finished and edited by October 1st, but I'm not giving up just ... Bait, Fish, and Reel Report for July 2013!

Honestly, this summer keeps trying to wriggle out of my grasp!  Well, I'm about to finally catch up with it, I think.... Someone once said that to be a successful and productive writer, one had to do the equivalent of “cutting bait, fishing, and reeling ‘em in, all at the same time”! This translates to writing as working on projects-in-progress while at the same time submitting completed projects to potential markets and also continuing to cultivate new ideas for future projects. In case you ... View Post

Belated Writing Prompt Wednesday: "Tides", a poem.

Written 8.8.13.  Inspired by my recent trip to the east coast, during which I spent many days on various beaches (and one day on a whale watch), and loved every second. *** I stand atop a granite peak the ocean at my feet white sails on the horizon white wings across the sky with sun on my skin I watch the tide as it comes in with wind and salt in my hair I watch the tide as it goes out. I stand at the prow of a ship cleaving through the sea white plumes of whale breath on the horizon white ... View Post
