Writing Prompt Wednesday: A snippet from the novel!

For the month of April, being that it is Camp NaNo month, all Writing Prompt Wednesday posts will be small sections of the part of the novel I am currently writing.  For today, please enjoy this little bit of Chapter 12, as of now the first chapter in Act 2.  Keep in mind, however, that this *is* still the rough draft, heh. *** She never thought she would wish so hard for the familiar trials of a modern airport - long lines, lots of waiting, lots of procedure, sure… but warm.  Enclosed.  And ... "Cutting bait, fishing, and reeling 'em in, all at the same time!"

That's what someone said about what you have to do to make a living as a writer, although just precisely who said it is escaping me at the moment.  When I remember, or if you know, please help jog my memory in the comments!  It refers to having to write projects, edit projects, and submit projects all at the same time, so that you're not wasting precious time sitting around on your hands doing nothing productive.  (Okay, let me rephrase, "doing nothing productive on your writing"... we all know ... Writing Prompt Wednesday… on Friday! A snippet!

Comments: A snippet of my short story tentatively entitled "Colorless."  Hope you enjoy!  - JRF *** Even through her young eyes, the world was colorless.  She stepped over the threshold of her home’s front door, staring in awe at her neighborhood street, her fingers trailing along the shiny top of the brass door handle before falling limply to her side.  The midnight sky was black as pitch, choked by columns of thick gray smoke that made her eyes sting.  She blinked back the tears, ... What I Learned about Prologues… WD Tutorial lessons!

As some of you know, I subscribed to the Writer's Digest Tutorials a few days ago.  Yesterday, I finally took the time to sit down and go through one of them, specifically the "Opening Up: How to Create Captivating Opening Pages" by literary agent Kathleen Ortiz.  You can find it and all other WD Tutorials here, if you are so inclined, and I highly recommend checking them out.  The subscription idea is a wonderful thing, too... unlimited access to all Tutorials, for up to a year if you wish. I ... View Post

Project List for March 2013

To help keep my thoughts in order these next few weeks, as we fast approach Camp NaNo (at reckless speed, really!), I decided to go ahead and track what I plan to get done for the rest of the month here, and cross items off the list as I go along.  So, let's see, my "Ta-Da List" for the rest of March (and it will surely be TA DA if I manage to get it all done!): Choose, prepare, edit, and submit five poems to The Animal Literary Magazine (it ended up being three poems, because the others ... Submission #1 – Living the Vision

Well... it's done. Today, I submitted my first short story, "In Morte, Omnia" to my first professional market, Clarksworld Magazine.  This process took weeks,  I don't even know how long anymore, I'll have to look it up in my Writing Journal!  Five drafts total, four wonderful betas, 3200 words (rounded up to the nearest hundred).  Every spare moment of many days spent researching possible literary markets, only to then remember the SFWA and find a whole new list of membership-qualifying ...
